Rebekah, The Cannon

VLA Theatre is honored to be able to display, in our lobby, an artillery piece from Civil War history. The cannon, which is named Rebekah, currently sits in our lobby in honor of our upcoming musical, The Civil War. Donated to us from Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Martin, the cannon is a 3" Wrought Iron Rifle, which is also known as an Ordnance Rifle. This type of rifle was used from the Civil War through the Spanish American War as the first rifled artillery piece. Purchased from Paulson Bro's in 1996, the cannon Mr. Daniel Martin donated is a replica of an actual Civil War gun. Mr. Martin has participated in several war re-enactments with the cannon, as well as what he calls "Hoot-n-Shoot's" in order to allow re-enactors to be able to get experience with firing weapons. Mr. Martin has participated in re-enactments in Jefferson, Temple, Longview, and San Angelo. He also had the honor of displaying the cannon at the Fort Taylor State Park, in Key West, for several years. Please feel free to stop by and check out this exciting piece, as well as several other artifacts from the Civil War time period. The artifacts will be on display during the running of our musical The Civil War,  February 4, 2011 through February 20, 2011.
